Individuals or business entities wishing to start a business in Hendry County, or who have an established from another county and would like to establish a new location in Hendry County, will need to obtain a Business Tax Receipt prior to doing business in Hendry County.

New Account

Businesses that begin offering goods or services from April 1 through September 30 will pay a prorated fee. All Business Tax Receipts expire on September 30th of each year and can be renewed after July 1st. Failure to renew a Business Tax Receipt will subject the business to delinquent fees of up to 25% of the Business Tax Receipt fee. Failure to hold a current Business Tax Receipt could result in the closure of the business by the appropriate authority.

It is the responsibility of the business owner to report to the Tax Collector a change of address, name change, ownership transfer or business closure.

There may be state or local licensing requirements for your business that will need to be submitted with your application. Please check any local, state, or federal laws and regulations for the type of business you have before applying for a Business Tax Receipt.

If the business is not a registered corporation, the business owner may be required to apply for a fictitious name. Fictitious Name applications are available at our office or on Sunbiz, and must be submitted through the Sunbiz website.

The information needed to apply for a Business Tax Receipt include, but are not limited to:

  • Business Name – You may need to register the business name with the Department of State Division of Corporations. It is recommended that you verify fictitious name requirements.
  • Physical location of the business (local zoning requirements)
  • Mailing address
  • Social Security or Federal Employee ID number
  • Supporting state, contractor, or other licenses or affidavits, if applicable

If the business is based inside the city limits, it may be necessary to obtain a municipal Business Tax Receipt as well.

Businesses operating from a commercial location not located within city limits may need to have their application reviewed by Hendry County Building and Permitting.

Tangible Property Tax Account

When you operate a business, or rent real property, the furnishings, equipment, signs, etc. are considered business assess and subject to a tax assessment. You will receive a Hendry County tangible personal property tax notice for these assets.

A tangible personal property tax is a tax assessed by the Property Appraiser. Business owners need to file a Tangible Property Tax Return DR-405 with the Property Appraiser before April 1 of each year to ensure your assets are assessed correctly or to determine if your business qualifies for an exemption. It is important that business owners contact the Property Appraiser when opening or closing a business to address their Tangible Property Tax Account.
